The People Republic of China (PRC) in its strides to help alleviate hunger in the country on Thursday, 16th May, 2019 donated one thousand (1,000) tons of rice to the government of Sierra Leone through the Ministry of Agriculture.

Handing over the 1000 tons of rice which is equivalent to twenty thousand (20,000) bags of 50kg rice, the Chinese Ambassador to Sierra Leone, Hu Zhangliang disclosed that the donation is the first batch of the six thousand (6,000) tons of rice the Chinese Government promised the people of Sierra Leone.

Ambassador Hu Zhangliang assured that the remaining five thousand (5000) tons equivalent to one hundred thousand (100,000) bags of 50kg will soon arrived.

The Chinese Government, he said, is always ready to help the people of Sierra Leone as both countries enjoy friendly ties. He therefore appealed to all Sierra Leoneans to see Chinese nationals as their brothers and sisters who are all working with one aim of seeing both China and Sierra Leone benefit from the friendly cooperation.

In his response, the Minister of Agriculture, Joseph Ndanema commended the Chinese Government, referring to the Ambassador as a true friend of Sierra Leone as has been demonstrated that in several interventions including health, infrastructure, technology, food security, among others.

The people of Sierra Leone, he said, recognise and appreciate the tremendous assistance from China assuring that the ‘New Direction’ administration will always work towards bettering cooperation with the Chinese Government.

He assured that the rice will be used for its intended purpose and for the benefit of the people of this country.
