Strasser Discharged

Former Head of State and Chairman of the National Provisional Ruling Council (NPRC) military regime, Rtd. Captain Valentine Essegrebo Melvin Strasser was last Friday discharged from Eurocare Advanced Diagnostic and Heart Care Centre in Accra, Ghana, a day earlier than expected.

The 51-year old former military Head of State was flown to Ghana a week ago for medical treatment after the intervention of President Julius Maada Bio, who also served the NPRC regime in various capacities, including Secretary of State, Deputy Head of State before he overthrew Rtd. Capt. Strasser in a palace coup in December, 1995.

After a successful nine-hour surgery on his left leg, Rtd. Capt. Strasser was visited at the hospital by the Sierra Leone High Commissioner to Ghana, Her Excellency Frances Anderson, who said the erstwhile Head of State was responding to treatment.

According to report, Rtd. Capt. Strasser was unable to walk when he arrived in Accra, but is now able to walk with the aid of a Zimmer frame until after some period before he would eventually walk without the use of it. He is reportedly under observation in a private residential facility in Accra guarded by Ghanaian secret service agents with nurses and physiotherapists at his disposal.

The former Head of State is expected to return to the hospital after two weeks for a review of his condition before the medics could determine when he would return home.
