Following allegations and counter-allegations by community residents and security personnel over the death of two young men on Monday 21st January, 2019 in Sahn Malen Chiefdom, Pujehun District, Socfin Agricultural Company which operates hundreds of acres of oil palm plantation in the chiefdom has finally issued a statement with regards its own version of the incident.

According to the management of the agricultural company, on Wednesday 16th January, 2019, the company’s agricultural department closed following the arrival of the Independent Member of Parliament (MP) for Constituency 104 in the Sahn Malen Chiefdom, when workers failed to show up for work on that day.

The company continued that its management was informed by the workers that they would not come to work due to the intimidation from certain irate youths, many of them alleged to be high on drugs and not from Sahn Malen Chiefdom.

The irate youths, the management said, were planning to involve the secret society in various parts of the chiefdom without the authorization of the Paramount Chief.

“Havoc and Chaos continued the following days and during all that period, mass organized fruit theft continued and many areas of the company’s plantation were no-go zones for even the police,” said Socfin Management, noting that the Resident Minister, South on Sunday, 20th January, 2019 visited Sahn Malen to look into a dispute over a plot of land in Sahn Town which the Independent MP wanted to build a Constituency office on and to ensure that peace reigns.

The Resident Minister was said to have met with the General Manager of Socfin where the secret ‘poro’ society and land dispute were discussed and an agreement was reached for additional protection to Socfin, adding that the Resident Minister twice engaged the people through the Chiefdom Community Radio.

Following the Resident Minister’s radio broadcast, intelligence revealed that the secret ‘poro’ society was to come out and panic eventually gripped the people who started fleeing the chiefdom.

Report added that a joint security of military and police personnel deployed in areas of strategic importance to Socfin Agricultural Company and on Monday 21st January, 2019, a large gang of youths attacked the joint security personnel stationed at Jao Junction in Upper Sahn Malen that resulted to the clash.
