SLPP, C4C @ War

Supporters of the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) and Coalition for Change (C4C) party on Sunday 28th October, 2018 had confrontation in the Kono District headquarters of Koidu city that left many residents injured and properties worth millions of Leones destroyed.

Chairman of the New Sembehun/Koidu City Council, Komba Mathew Sam said the confrontation between members and supporters of the two traditional political parties was ignited by an unpopular market chairlady that was imposed on traders because of political interference.

Mayor Sam recalled that on 20th June, 2018, the New Sembehun/Koidu City Council, according to its mandate, appointed Madam Kumba Jabbie to serve as Interim Chairlady of the Gbenseh market in Koidu, adding that the decision was rejected by the grassroots of SLPP in Koidu that decided to bring in their own candidate to serve in that capacity.

The Mayor said the issue of who would be generally accepted as the Chairlady was ongoing until Monday 22nd October, 2018  when, he said, he travelled to Freetown to attend an official function, adding that it was in his absent that the Central Government went ahead to crown one of the contenders without reaching a consensus agreement with other parties.

Mayor Sam asserted that the imposition of the wrong choice on the majority led to the confrontation between supporters of the ruling SLPP and Coalition for Change (C4C). The situation, he said, has been calmed down and that investigations are ongoing. The Mayor however pleaded with his people to go about their normal business and not to allow chairlady position to derail their progress.
