PRISON BREAK! Court Martial Suspect Escapes

Combined forces of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) and the paramilitary wing of the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) yesterday 21st May, 2019 launched a manhunt for Capt. Patrick Edwin Kamara after he was reported to have escaped from military custody at the Wilberforce Barracks in Freetown.

Capt. Patrick Edwin Kamara, who is now a fugitive, was erstwhile Officer-in-Charge of former President Ernest Bai Koroma’s bodyguards.

It could be recalled that Capt. Patrick Edwin Kamara has been facing court martial since last year on allegations of a large cache of arms and ammunition he did not account for after the presidential run-off election on 31st March, 2018 which the then main opposition Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) presidential candidate, Rtd. Brig. Julius Maada Bio won in a very close contest.

As at press time, circumstances surrounding his escape from military custody were unclear, but sources close to the court martial have disclosed that the military police and intelligence wing of the RSLAF are investigating the escape.
