Parliamentary Committee Chair On Labour Talks Tough

By Alhaji Mansaray

Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Labour, Hon. Saidu Barba Kamara of the All People’s Congress (APC) has insisted that Ministries Department and Agencies (MDAs) within the purview of the Parliamentary Oversight Committee on Labour must strictly follow labour laws to the letter and ensure that they seek the interest of their workers.

Addressing officials from Mano Forestry at a meeting held recently in Parliament, Hon. Kamara added that the Committee is not in anyway witch- hunting anyone but wants to ensure that the correct things are done. He assured that the Committee would work with MDAs in the interest of moving the country forward.

The MP further frowned at reports of incidents of accidents at the Mano Forestry for which, he said, the Committee is interested to inspect the company’s insurance policy. He however commended Mano Forestry for employing Sierra Leoneans and for the projects the company is undertaking in the country.

According to officials from Mano Forestry, the company has employed over 900 Sierra Leoneans and that they are operating in Yoni and Masemira communities in the Northern Province, adding the company   has insurance policy for its workers.

Other members of the Committee made meaningful contributions during the meeting and admonished officials of the company to adhere to the labour laws of the country.
