The Parliamentary Committee on Appointment and Public Service yesterday Thursday 19th March, 2020 quizzed the newly nominated Inspector General of the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) and four other presidential nominees in Committee Room No. 1 at Parliament Building, Tower Hill, Freetown.

When grilled by the Committee about what his administration would do if approved, the newly nominated Inspector General, Ambrose Michael Sovula responded that his administration would look into and set up a strategy for sweeping reforms in the SLP that would include the introduction of a ‘people-centered’ policing that would involve engaging the people instead of coercing them.

He furthered that his administration would look at many anomalies in the SLP, noting that the people have the right to peaceful demonstration as long as they discuss the purpose of their demonstration with the SLP as required by the 1965 Public Order Act.

The IG nominee also assured the parliamentary committee of creating a proper policing that will ensure the enjoyment of peace and tranquility which the general citizenry will accept or embrace, adding that as a Peace and Development scholar, he will investigate the root causes of youth conflict and Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) and proffer solutions to them.

Ambrose M. Sovula also assured that if approved as the next Inspector General of the SLP, he would fairly discharge his duties with the fear of God because, according to him, he is a God-fearing fervent Christian.

On disciplinary action, Ambrose Sovula emphasized that disciplinary action in the SLP would start from him down to the lowest rank.

One of the Committee members, Hon. Bashiru Sidikie advised the newly appointed IG to serve the nation with aplomb, diligence and honesty as they would be always knocking at his door for community-related issues. The other four nominees, proposed Executive Chairman, Board of Directors, Environment Protection Agency (EPA), Dr. Bondi Gevao, proposed member, Board of Directors Sierra Leone Local Content Agency, Mr. Zainu Deen Karim, proposed member, National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency, Dr. Abdul Jalloh, and proposed member, National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency were also vetted by the parliamentary committee.
