More Appointments Soon

Changing of key political appointees of former President Ernest Bai Koroma in the public service continues.

Last week, President Rtd. Brig. Julius Maada Bio announced the names of 37 Ambassadors, High Commissioners and their Deputies to replace all those he laid off that were appointed by former President Koroma.

President Bio has also ordered the dissolution of oversight boards of parastatals and other state institutions with effect from past Tuesday as an initial stage in the process of restructuring them.

According to a public notice from the Office of the President, oversight boards which have been recently appointed in May and June, 2018 and the following management/oversight boards are exempt from the notice: i) National Electoral Commission ii) Judicial and Legal Service Commission iii) Law Reform Commission iv) Sierra Leone Teaching Board v) National Council for Technical, Vocational and Other Academic Awards.

While many of the vacancies in some parastals and commissions have been filled, the President is still to announce appointees to the Human Rights Commission for Sierra Leone (HRC-SL), National Commission for Democracy (NCD) and Independent Media Commission (IMC).

The HRC-SL was set up by an Act of Parliament after the eleven-year-long civil conflict to defend and promote the interest of citizens who have complaints of violations of their human rights against government institutions. It is imperative that it is fully functional to safeguard citizens against abuse of authority.

The NCD plays a pivotal role in fostering democracy through educating, enlightening and sensitizing the populace on their civic rights and responsibilities.

The IMC serves as the interface between the media and the public that it serves in a regulatory capacity to prevent the media from stepping on the toes of their fellow citizens without redress. But since he dissolved the Boards of these three Commissions, President Bio has not named caretakers to oversee them.

Also, he has not announced the new Board Chairpersons of the two state owned financial institutions, Sierra Leone Commercial Bank and Rokel Commercial Bank.

President Bio’s list of diplomatic appointments will be completed with the announcement of the names of Press Attachés of the Embassies and High Commissions.

Meanwhile, The Exclusive has reliably learnt from sources within the corridors of power that not as many Press Attachés would be appointed by the Bio administration as were appointed by the former Koroma administration, given the current economic situation of the country.
