The Sierra Leone Teaching Service Commission (SLTSC) recently disclosed in Parliament that the Government of Sierra Leone (GoSL) has through the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE) recruited 6, 682 teachers with 3, 178 with pin codes while 3,504 are yet to receive theirs.

The disclosure comes past Thursday 18th July, 2019 following the invitation of the SLTSC and the Ministry of Basic Secondary School Education (MBSSE) by the Parliament Oversight Committee on Basic and Secondary School Education chaired by Hon. Dominic Lavallie, to update the Committee on the successes and challenges of the Free Quality Education programme.

According to SLTSC, out of the said figure, 1, 256 teachers were recruited for the Southern Region, 1,654 for the Eastern Region, 2,872 for the Northern Region and 900 for the Western Area.

In his statement, the Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Dominic Lavallie said the invitation of the two institutions was not a witch-hunt but to ensure that the President’s flagship programme becomes a success story.

The Chairman furthered that they have found out duplications in payment to schools in different Bank Accounts, adding that some commercial banks have refused to accept documents submitted by the MBSSE in relation to payment of subsidies.

Hon. Lavallie also called for the database on recruitment, replacement and retirement of teachers by schools and districts.
