Gov’t Pays Fees For 8000 Schools

Addressing parents and guardians on the free quality education project in Mattru Jong, Bonthe District at the Weekend, the  Minister of Basic and Secondary Education, Alpha Osman Timbo Esq. has disclosed that eight thousand (8000) schools have received school fees and other charges for two million and fourteen thousand (2,014,000) pupils for the free quality education project.

According to the Minister, prior to the launch of the scheme, a survey was conducted from which statistics showed that there are a total of 2,014,000 pupils from 8000 government and government assisted schools across the country.

These figures, he said, were forwarded to the Finance Ministry which was used for the allocation of funds for the project. “We are paying Le10,000 per pupil in primary, Le50,000 in Junior Secondary School and Le 60,000 for Senior Secondary School and all the money will be paid on Monday, 3rd September 2018 to all the schools’ account,” assured the Minister, noting further that the early payment is made to avoid extortion or exploitation by school authorities when schools re-open.

He therefore warned against harassment and vowed that any school authority found wanting of extortion or exploitation will face the full force of the law.

The free education package, he said, will include text books for four core subjects, exercise books and other learning materials plus feeding.

He therefore urged Sierra Leoneans to take ownership of the project as, according to him, “education is the bedrock for the development of any country.”
