The Chief Monitoring Officer of Mines, Mohamed Bah has during a monitoring exercise conducted by National Minerals Agency (NMA) confirmed the arrest of six illicit miners in the Tonkolili District, Northern Province following a raid conducted by the agency.

According to him, excavators used by the illicit miners in a number of chiefdoms in the district were impounded during the raid, adding that the NMA would ensure that they are prosecuted.

Illegal mining, he said, discourages investors and reduces expected revenue generated by the mining sector. For these and more reasons, he concluded, the Agency intends to continue its monitoring operations countrywide.
