For Electricity Theft… 102 Arrested

The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA), Sahr Napo has disclosed that 102 people have been arrested during a move to curb illegal abstraction of electricity.

According to the PRO, EDSA has set up a team that would continue the operation to curb illegal abstraction of electricity. He stated that EDSA buys electricity from the generating company – Electricity Generation and Transmission Company (EGTC) and sells it to their customers.

“So if the customers are utilizing the power without paying for it, it means that we at the other end will not have the capacity to pay our generating form for the power,” he said.

EDSA, he continued, has investigated and discovered that large customers including hotels, cinemas, welding shops and others steal over two hundred and thirty nine million Leones (Le239m) worth of electricity. In addition to that, he said, individual households also illegally use electricity supply and others refuse to pay blaming it on no-installation of metres.

“This means we are running at a deficit,” fumed the PRO, noting that irrespective of running at deficit they still have the responsibility to ensure that people receive electricity.

He therefore called on the public and customers to cooperate in ending illegal use of electricity.
