The National Civil Registration Authority (NCRA) will soon commence the process of issuing new ECOWAS certified security Identity Cards, replacing the current one which was used in the past elections.

According to the head of NCRA, Andrew Massaquoi, the new ECOWAS Security I.D Card will be used by eligible voters in the forthcoming 2022,/2023 local and general elections, instead of the locally made I.D Card that was temporarily issued out to voters in the 2018 general elections.

He told the press recently that the NCRA is in the process of securing the services of a competent printing institution in the region to carry out this task, adding that advertisement has already been placed out to the public.

The NCRA boss also noted that unlike the current temporal I.D Card that was used in the past elections, the new I.D Card will contain security features and personal data and will be valid to serve as a travelling document within the ECOWAS sub-region.

Massaquoi further noted that, the NCRA will not be carryout any new registration but will be using the data collected during the past registrations and that of the current registration process that was put on hold due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 in the country.

He also disclosed that the National Electoral Commission (NEC) will be using the NCRA data to extract the 2022/2023 voters list, following which all registered voters will be given the new I.D cards.

In spite of this, the National Youth Secretary General of the main opposition All People’s Congress  (APC), Alie Conteh has called on the NCRA to involve the participation of all political parties in the process of issuing this new I.D Cards so that they will be able to properly understand the mechanics of the new security cards and how political parties can monitor and track the system to ensure that the right people are given the cards and also for them to help in the awareness raising and sensitization activities.
