The Minister of Basic and Secondary Education, Lawyer Alpha Osman Timbo has presented the Ministry’s total budget spending for the 2019 Fiscal Year at Budget hearing at the Bank of Sierra Leone Complex in Kingtom, Freetown, amounting to Le1.87 Trillion.

According to Lawyer Timbo, the Ministry is currently looking at ways to improve the salary of teachers, adding that adequate provisions have been made for the prompt payment of teachers’ salaries. Government, he added, had restricted implementation of free quality education to government and government assisted schools.

The Minister continued that schools in some remote villages are yet to be approved by government but that government is taking proactive steps to ensure that these schools are approved so that children there would benefit from the scheme.

Going forward, the Minister said, the Ministry would soon replace untrained and unqualified teachers with trained and qualified ones as, according to him, government’s development partners would only aid education when there are trained and qualified personnel in schools. The admission in public schools, he said, has dramatically increased due to direct subsidy paid by government.
