Fatima Bio Inspires African First Ladies

By Thomas S. Kembay

Speaking at the 2nd Africa Girls Summit on the ending of child marriage, last Friday, 23rd November 2018, the First Lady, Mrs. Fatima Bio has encourage other First Ladies in Africa to step up robust means of protecting girls from early marriage.

The First Lady referred to child marriage as a weapon that has been used for too long to destroy the future of fine African women.

“How many of our girls in Africa are protected?” she asked, pointing out that getting married can only be fashioned when the individual is ready for it which, she said, will result to happy married life. In Africa, she said, there are many girls between the ages of 13 and 14 who are mothers.

She therefore called on other African First Ladies to start robust campaign against early child marriage. She encouraged her counterparts to engage in community education on early marriage in a bid to create the much needed awareness that will help in discouraging it.

She also pleaded with parents to stop forcing their daughters into early marriage and urged them to be good parents.

H.E Fatima Bio concluded that most of the common illnesses in Africa such as fistula, infertility and infant mortality are associated with early marriage and therefore called on all to join in the empowerment of young girls in Africa.
