EU On Charcoal Project In Salone

By Ayodele Deen Cole

The European Union in Sierra Leone is currently undertaking a pilot project in sustainable charcoal production in the country, showing its potential to reduce the pressure on forests.

Under this component of a socio-economic review on sustainable charcoal production, the project is calling for the establishment of charcoal plantations, from which experiences could be used as input for the development of a sustainable charcoal production strategy and related policies.

The REDD+ and Capacity Building Project, a Sierra Leone EU partnership is part of the EU support to improve on environmental issues across the country. It is part of the Global Climate Change Alliance programme that should pilot the REDD+ at the national level and build the capacity of the Forestry Division at the Ministry of Agriculture Forestry and Food Security (MAFFS) to implement the REDD+.

The National REDD+ programme became operational in 2013.
