Ernest Confesses -The APC Needs Reform

The National Chairman and Leader of the main opposition All People’s Congress (APC), erstwhile President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma has after listening carefully to the petition made by the National Reformation Movement (NRM) agreed that the party needs to undergo reforms in its internal politics.

The APC National Chairman and Leader made the concession in a recent meeting between the party leadership and NRM held at the EBK Conference Hall at the APC National Secretariat on Old Railway Line, Brookfields, Freetown, to discuss the content of the report of the 9-Man Committee in the implementation of the recommendations made and realization of the strategic roadmap that would lead the party into the 2023 national elections.

The party Chairman and Leader wholeheartedly endorsed the NRM’s call for reforms and was concurred by the National Secretary General, Amb. Alhaji Osman Foday Yansaneh, who said the call for democratic reforms in the party was timely. The party scribe registered the leadership’s readiness and commitment to address what he called anomalies in the party through revision and overhaul. As such, Amb. Alhaji Osman F. Yansaneh announced that the White Paper subsequent upon the Committee of 9 Report would be published soon and made available to NRM.

The Chairman and Leader, who identified NRM as its Chief Adviser, stated that he has the urgent task to get the party a new constitution that reflects current political realities that would remain popular for a long time. He spoke of a reformed APC in which the people would collectively decide on who would lead them at every level of the party structures.

He therefore appealed to party members and supporters at home and abroad who are agitating for reforms in the party to do so in a manner that would not divide the party. On the question of his continued leadership of the party, former President said while he would always remain to be a blue-blooded member of the APC, his status as former Head of State is not commensurate with being a leader of the party. Therefore, he would relinquish the position of National Chairman and Leader.

Another concession that the APC leadership made to NRM was that they would be part of the membership of the Constitutional Review Committee (CRC) which should finish its work within three months.

Amongst other stalwarts that attended the meeting were representatives of NRM, the APC National Deputy Chairman and Leader, National Organizing Secretary, some former government Ministers, members of the National Advisory Committee (NAC) and National Publicity Secretary.
