Date & Venue Set For Commission Of Inquiry

Sources at the Sierra Leone Judiciary have confirmed to The Exclusive that the Commission of Inquiry ordered by President Rtd. Brig. Julius Maada Bio to look into the affairs of 51 government officials and associates in the erstwhile Ernest Bai Koroma administration from November, 2007 to  April, 2018 will soon commence.

According to the Law Officers Department spokesperson, the date and venue for the sitting of the Commission of Inquiry will be announced soon, adding that the announcement will be made shortly after the two constitutional instruments setting it up are debated and approved by the House of Parliament.

Already, a Commissioner, Justice Biobela from the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Secretary have been appointed.

The debate of the two instruments was requested by Members of Parliament of the main opposition All People’s Congress (APC) that are in majority in the House of Parliament, citing that as representatives of the people, they have a right to contribute to the setting up of the Commission of Inquiry which, they said, they are not against but that the ruling party must legalize it in a proper way.

It could be recalled that on 2nd August, 2018, the Deputy Attorney General and Minister of Justice tabled in Parliament Constitutional Instruments 64 and 65 that set the Commission of Inquiry alongside a forensic audit of all Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).

The instruments became the subject of heated debate by APC MPs, who maintained that such an important constitutional matter should not pass through the House and become law without debate.

Meanwhile, the House is in recess but Parliament sources confirmed that with a compromise reached between the ruling party and the main opposition party in parliament, the two instruments will be debated immediately after the House returns from recess.
