COIs Report Out Today

The Exclusive has reliably learnt from sources close to the corridors of power that the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr. Priscilla Schwartz will today present to President Dr. Julius Maada Bio report on the findings, recommendations and observations of the three government’s appointed judge-led Commissions of Inquiry into the performance of officials of the erstwhile All People’s Congress (APC) Government would be published this weekend.

It could be recalled that after the New Direction government headed by President Rtd. Brig. Dr. Julius Maada Bio came to power on 4th April 2018, a Governance Transition Team (GTT) established to investigate allegations of corruption, racketeering and other administrative and managerial malfeasances by officials of the former APC Government labelled ‘Persons of Interest’ to the inquiry.

They included the former President, the two Vice Presidents that served under him, Ministers, Deputies, Chairpersons and heads of state-owned institutions.

The inquiry, which started formally at the former Special Court compound on Jomo Kenyatta Avenue in late February 2019 and lasted till early this year, heard testimonies from state counsels, counsels for the Persons of Interest and witnesses brought forward by both parties.

Establishment of the three Commissions and Inquiry led separately by Justice Biobele Georgewill from Nigeria, Justice Atuguba from Ghana and Justice Bankole Thompson from Sierra Leone was not without a lot of opposition from the main opposition APC that called the process both in and out of Parliament as a witch-hunt, with legal motions sought by APC lawyers in the court and before the commissioners questioning the validity of the instruments that established the Commissions as well as the rules under which they were to operate.

Upon receiving the report, the President will take it to Cabinet where it would be discussed comprehensively before coming out with a White Paper that would later be tabled in Parliament for debate.
