COI White Paper… Ban Awaits Ernest, Samura, Others

One of the amendments in the revised Anti-Corruption Commission law that was forwarded to parliament by Commissioner Joseph Ben Kaifala for ratification last year was that any public official found guilty of corruption henceforth must have the fruits of the crime seized and forfeited to the state and that official ban from participating in public life for a certain number of years.

In this light, it is the fear of the main opposition All People’s Congress (APC) members that served in  the Erstwhile Ernest Bai Koroma administration that ruled the country from 2007 to 2018 that the Cabinet White Paper that will follow the report of the Commission of Inquiry (COI) would recommend that erstwhile APC government ministers,  heads of MDAs and other professionals invited as persons of interest by the Commission would face bans from public life and have their properties seized and confiscated to the state, subject to the approval of parliament.

APC 2018 presidential flag bearer, Dr Samura Kamara last week openly stated on a social media platform that the  ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party in order to weaken the APC ahead of the 2023 elections would recommend that he and the party chairman and leader Dr Ernest Bai Koroma be banned from participating in public life.

However, Dr Samura Kamara maintained that he is not worried about the findings of the commission of inquiry as he was not called to testify before it about his assets and holdings. Whatever allegations that were made against him he considered them frivolous as, according to him, he behaved responsibly whilst serving the government.

“If the Commission of inquiry had anything against me, they would have called me,” Dr Samura Kamara maintained.

According to Dr Samura Kamara, the only thing he was questioned about was the sale of the Sierra Rutile assets which the Financial Secretary when questioned could not link him with.

Asked if the government would ban him from politics, he said he did not want to preempt what would be but stated that anything is possible because he is a popular opposition politician that the people want as the next leader because this government has failed to deliver on its promises to the people.

Dr Samura Kamara maintained that the COI was not done genuinely and that the government would want to use the outcome to ban some APC politicians to disrupt the peace and tranquility of the party in order to weaken it ahead of the next elections.

He stated that the government would focus on him and Ernest so that the party would find it hard to find a good flag bearer for the 2023 presidential elections. However, he said should that be the case, they are preparing and would know how to face it.
