At a recent signing ceremony of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Ministry of Water Resources and China Geo-Engineering Corporation (CGG) on the Rokel River scheme, the Vice President, Dr. Juldeh Jalloh has said that access to safe drinking water is a growing national challenge, making it a necessary priority in the ‘New Direction’ agenda.

Vice President Juldeh Jalloh furthered that the President’s decision to prioritize access to safe drinking water is strategic in the fact that it is interwoven into the potential success or failure of all other plans especially the free education implementation and reduction of teenage pregnancy.

Giving an overview of the project, the Minister of Water Resources, Dr. Jonathan Tenbge stated that given the challenges encountered in water distribution to the population, a significant secondary source is of the utmost importance. Minister Tengbeh furthered that Port Loko has been selected as a suitable site for the expansion of the said project, given its year round availability of water. The Rokel River expansion scheme, he said, is expected to commence after assessment by the China Geo-Engineering Corporation (CGC) which is expected to have been concluded in six months’ time.
