APC To Review 1995 Constitution

  • NAC Appoints Committee Members
  • Committee To Report 31st January

Members of the National Reformation Movement (NRM) can pat themselves on the back for having scored a significant victory in their fight to get the leadership of the main opposition All People’s Congress (APC) to accede to their demand for change of the 1995 Party Constitution to be in line with democratic tenets.

It could be recalled that after APC lost the March 2018 presidential runoff election, there were calls from home and abroad by disgruntled members for an investigation into the causes of the party’s defeat and findings and recommendations to be made with regards the way forward.

Accordingly, the APC National Chairman and Leader, former President Ernest Bai Koroma at a party gathering in the Northern city of Makeni announced that a 9-man committee would be set up for that purpose. The NRM came up to pile pressure on the party leadership by publishing their own findings on the causes of the party’s defeat and amongst the recommendations they made was that the 1995 Party Constitution must be revised.

Now based on the recommendations of the 9-man committee appointed by the National Advisory Committee (NAC), the APC National Secretary General, Amb. Alhaji Osman Foday Yansaneh on Saturday 3rd November, 2018 released a public notice from the party’s National Secretariat in Freetown as follows:

The National Secretariat of the All People’s Congress is pleased to inform its members that in accordance with the findings and recommendations of the 9-man committee, the National Advisory Committee (NAC) at a meeting on Friday 2nd November, 2018 has approved the setting up of a Constitutional Review Committee with the mandate to review the APC 5th December, 1995 constitution of the party and submit a report to NAC.

The Committee is expected to complete not later than 31st January, 2018. Upon completion of this task, the amended constitution shall be ratified and adopted by the National Delegates Conference of the party.

Pursuant to the above, NAC has appointed members of the committee with terms of reference to serve in the Constitutional Review Committee.

The APC wishes to assure all members that the party is committed to ensuring that its principles, ideologies, aims and objectives are upheld at all times.
