The Minister of Energy, Alhaji Kanja Sesay has recently disclosed that up to eight thousand (8000) prepaid meters will arrive in the country this July to address the acute shortage of meters, across the Western Area Urban District.

He made the disclosure last week during a visit by the Vice President, Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh at the Energy Ministry.

According to the Energy Minister, the ministry has previously planned to purchase two thousand prepaid meters but decided to increase the number to 8000 due to high demand for electricity meters in the Western Area.

He noted that when the meters arrive, the Ministry will distribute them on a first-come, first-serve basis, as according to him the ministry has already received hundreds of thousands of application for meters.

Alhaji Sesay also frowned at the high rate of illegal connections and recommended that a private company be employed to take care of such issues. He further noted that the Ministry has hired the services of a private company to purchase the meters, and that everything will be done fairly.

The Minister also expressed his commitment to conduct steering committee meetings on a monthly basis which, according to him, will serve as a monitoring mechanism to identify and work on key deliverables which would enable the country to become compact eligible under the MMCU.

In his response, the Vice President expressed satisfaction for the work done by the Energy Minister, noting that the government is on spot to achieved the MCCU, as according to him, the country has already scored twelve out of twenty in the MCCU threshold programme. He promised that the government would provide more resources to make sure the energy sector becomes more effective.
