3 Months Baby Survives Rape

By Ayodele Deen-Cole

A three month baby has become the latest survivor of rape in the country, after successfully undergoing treatment at the Rainbow Initiative Centre in Freetown.

This information was made known to this press by the Head of Information at Rainbow Center, Alisson French.

According to Alisson French following the death of a 5-year old rape victim, the 3-month old baby who was raped early this year is among the thousands of victims treated at the center between 2019 and 2020.

She revealed to the press that between the said period, the Rainbow Initiative Center recorded up to three thousand one hundred and seventy cases of Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) adding that three thousand victims of that number were treated for sexual penetration.

According to the Information Officer, the number of SGBV cases are increasing on a daily basis, despite the stringent laws put in place by the government.

She also told this press that at present, there is no known cause for the increase in SGBV cases across the country.

However, she stated that the outbreak of the COVID-19 can be cited as one factors responsible for this increase. Asked whether the Center has the capacity to handle such huge number of cases, Alisson French stated that the Center is facing lots of challenges and constraints ranging from finance to the lack of adequate centers across the country to treat SGBV cases. She said that at present, they only have about 5 centers nationwide which is not sufficient for them considering the work they do.

Another serious challenge, she noted, is that of the lack of forensic laboratory  to carryout treatment on serious rape matters like the present rape to death issue of a five-year old girl.
